I wrote about my “writing prompt exercise” in my welcome post, and here is another one! Enjoy.
Writing Prompt
Within the shadows is a forgotten face, withered with time and aged by malice.
Writing prompt exercise
I stood there, staring at a face I had never seen before. Anger flashed in the black eyes of a person so old, I couldn’t determine the gender (the person would have to tell me, anyway).
Why was this person here, living in the shadows? What had brought them here? Why did they stay?
These thoughts ran through my head as I called out, “Hello?”
“Who are you?” the voice, crackling with age and lack of use, croaked back at me.
“I-I’m here on a journey,” I replied, stepping forward. “I’m seeking someone.”
“No one is here,” the voice croaked. The person didn’t move, but the shadows lessened, showing a face cragged with wrinkles. Anger flashed in their eyes. “No one ever comes here. You should not be here!” The last sentence ended in a scream.
I stepped back. “I’m sorry to have disturbed you. My friend came this way, and I’m searching for her.”
“Why would she come here?” The voice was quieter again.
“I don’t know. The creature at the edge of the woods said she came this way.”
“Creature?”
“Yes,” I said. “There’s a small humanoid creature — a gnome, maybe? Anyway, he lives on the edge of the woods, and he pointed this way when I asked about my friend.”
Purpose of this prompt
I wrote about why I’m doing this exercise in a separate post. But what purpose does this writing prompt exercise serve? Well, it serves three purposes by:
- Keeping me in the practice of writing.
- Helping generate story ideas.
- Offering you sneak peeks into what I might be working on next.
This piece is raw and unedited. I have made no changes from the words I wrote long-hand in my notebook. Why would I do that? Because I want to show y’all that what you write doesn’t have to be perfect the first time. Don’t let perfect get in the way of getting things done.
Got any ideas for writing prompts you would like to see me use in a writing prompt exercise? Drop them in the comments. I can always use new ideas. Also, if you want to support me, visit my Patreon or Buy me a Coffee.
That’s all for now. Stay fabulous, y’all!
